Welcome to BSBEC-BioMASS

Perennial bioenergy crops research hub

Biomass from fast-growing trees and grasses is a sustainable source of renewable energy. However, we need to improve yields if we are to meet government objectives for bioenergy and biofuel production. The biggest challenges are:

  1. to improve the amount of biomass that can be harvested without increasing the inputs needed to grown the crop, such as nitrogen fertilisers (as these are energy intensive to make)
  2. to make more of the plants' carbon in the biomass available for conversion into biofuels
